Featured App: Recreation.gov Camping

campgovThe Recreation.gov Camping app wants to put its users in touch with available campsites at National Parks, forests, and other Federal recreation facilities.

The app provides users with instant availability information for campsites, cabins, day-use, and other camping sites. The app also allows users to explore dates for future reservations.

The app’s database provides relevant details about campsites as well as photos of each campsite, making it a viable tool to explore previously unknown campsites as well.

For RVers, the app allows users to search for RV friendly sites, equipment length restrictions, and sites that allow a hook-up.

Additionally, the app also provides:

  • Map and list views of campground search results
  • The ability to create a list of “favorite” campgrounds for further ease
  • Driving directions to campgrounds
  • Summaries of available campsites
  • Option to reserve campgrounds online or by phone

Users are able to search for sites the following criteria:

  • Campgrounds near current location
  • Near another city of address
  • Name of campground, park, or facility
  • Activities and amenities the user would like
  • Arrival date and length of stay

This app is really useful for anyone with the itch to camp who doesn’t really know where to start, or is looking for a specific amenity at a campsite. As the app is informative and easy to use, let this app guide those new to camping or looking for someplace new to camp!

It is unfortunate that most if not all gov. sites are now by reservation. Many of us are spontaneous and travel on a whim. If I find a nice camp site on a first come basis I tend to stay awhile, but with the reservation system I will probably get kicked out by the weekend cause of someones reservation. And many times the site remains open by no show. It maybe fair for some, but certainly not all. One of my favorite National Forest campgrounds just went reservation.gov. This is not a one size fits all system. It surely needs improvement.
